Here are a list of tips before booking a magician
Member of the prestige Magic Society
The magic circle is the most prestige magic society in the world. It's not essential that the magician you are booking is a member of the magic circle, but if they are, you can expect a good show. Members of the magic circle take pride in their art. It's not easy to become a member, therefore members work very hard to perfect their act.
Professional
The word 'Professional' can be mis-used. A professional magician is a full-time, experienced magician who entertains as their sole job. Don't be afraid to ask. A professional relies on bookings to continue their career, therefore the magician takes pride in entertaining to a very high standard every time.
Insured
Make sure the magician you are booking has public liability insurance.
Photo's
Photo's on websites are a good source of proof to show great audience reactions. A variety of photo's are important. Not just one photo of a guy holding a magic wand, but performance photo's.
Demonstration
Doing tricks is one thing, performing magic is another. A demonstration show reel is provided to show the reaction you can expect from you and your guests. A show reel provides proof that the magician can entertain with magic, not just do tricks.
Budget
As with most things, 'you get what you pay for'. If you have a very small budget, then hiring a magician may not be the answer. That said, in comparison to the cost of other things at a corporate event, wedding or trade show, a magician is one of the least expensive additions.
I trust that the above will help you when booking your magician.
